Yadhira Gonzalez-Taylor's retelling of the old Caribbean folktale is as colorful as the accompanying illustrations! Don't let the title fool you; there's much more to this story than it suggests. Without giving it away, let's just say (Martina Finds a Shiny Coin) is a beautiful lesson in self-esteem and finding deeper meaning while not judging things on [superficial] appearance.
Those familiar with the original folktale will find new ingredients and an alternate conclusion to the old tale; making it not only more palatable and entertaining, but also more cohesive and direct in driving home the lesson. With Gonzalez-Taylor's retelling, there's a particular authenticity present, as we're treated to the flavor of Puerto Rico with the sprinkling of Spanish words in key areas – and an accompanying glossary for translation to English."

Martina and the Wondrous Waterfall ... not only does it teach kids acceptance of others but it also teaches them about the wonderful things that can happen when they work together!

Martina Finds a Shiny Coin ... "was a welcome addition to my two daughters' Kindles. The Kindles are too often filled with apps, games, and Netflix. Finding short books like these that they can read on their own or together with me make them so much more valuable to my family – but more importantly, the girls are enjoying the book (and the Kindles more). You will not regret picking this up if you have kids, nieces, etc."

"Martina Finds a Shiny Coin is a wonderful children's book based on a Puerto Rican folktale. This lovely edition includes charming watercolor illustrations, a glossary of Spanish words and a closing note from the author that adds depth and meaning to the story.
I have been looking forward to reading this book since I registered for a giveaway on Goodreads. I was thrilled to win and as soon as I received the book, my son tore open the envelope and we read the book together. He enjoyed every page, laughed about pigs driving a van and was curious about cellos. I loved the fact that he was exposed to another language in the context of a meaningful story and learned a bit about a culture in another part of the world.
The best compliment I can give this book is from my two-year-old who said, "more book" when we were finished. We will be reading it many times. Recommended!"

"Someone asked me : 'Why do you want to read a book for kids?"
Well, I said, "Do I need to be a  certain age to read a beautiful story?"
So that was what happened when I read this lovely book.
Such a beautiful story that renews our faith in dreams and warms our heart. Martina Finds a Shiny Coin is a beautiful story for children of all ages, including those like me that are more than 20 years old :)"

Martina and the Wondrous Waterfall ...  "is a wonderful children's story about various animals that each play their own instruments. One day, the [mouse] and the roach are both playing and… brag that their instruments are more beautiful than the other's. To find out [which] is more beautiful sounding they decide to go to a waterfall to see who's playing will stop the falls from flowing. Along the way, they meet other animals who play different instruments and decide to take up the challenge to prove their playing and that their instrument is the most beautiful sounding.

…A delightful story about competition and teamwork. The story has Spanish interwoven into it; using the Spanish words for the animals as the animals' last names, as well as sprinkling in other words here and there. The back of the book contains a glossary with pronunciation keys and brief definitions. Overall it is an enjoyable book and very readable."
